and pressed the trigger.
I flinch at the sounds of gunfire and disbelief,
watch, helpless, as the man shields his son
even as his legs give way in death.
Darkness falls and the wolves come,
but to them I am invisible,
just a spectator from the future
held in horrid fascination,
longing for the morning light.
Then the women come
and what they have to do
is too much to bear.
I wipe away the tears
with cold and sorry fingers.
I will never forget Kalavryta.
